It’s hard to believe considering his innate gifts, experience and drive, but Charlie Puth claims he never thought about being a singer until he was 18.
“I didn’t consider it as a career until then,” Puth says. “I think it’s because I was very afraid of singing in front of people. I could sing around the house and in front of a camera but I was uneasy singing in front of a crowd as a teenager.”
Much has changed for Puth, 24, who is belting out songs in theaters. The stylish pop/R&B vocalist, who has been playing jazz since he was 4, is touring behind his debut album, “Nine Track Mind,” which is comprised of innocuous, earnest and occasionally rousing tunes.
“I figured out where I need to be,” Puth says while calling from his Los Angeles home. “I always loved playing piano. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes part of this but I needed to get up there and sing.”

“The album was a challenge and certain aspects of songwriting are a challenge for me but I worked really hard on the songs that appear on my album,” he says. “I’m not very good with lyrics. I’ll come up with choruses and phrases. My thing is melody and production. I’m not perfect.”
Give him credit for his honesty. Even with his enviable set of pipes, Puth admits to using Auto-Tune to enhance his vocals.
“I have no problem telling you that,” he says. “The reality is that so many people (in the industry) use it. We’re so used to hearing everything perfectly. Sometimes I go flat. I’m human. But I am a bit of a perfectionist and I will use Auto-Tune. It’s the age we live in. I do what I have to do to make the best music possible. I work hard as I can.”
When Puth talks work ethic, he can’t help but mention Springsteen, who he has experienced onstage and around his former neighborhood.
“I’ve seen Bruce on his motorcycle driving around and I saw him in 2008 perform on tour and he just takes it to another level,” Puth says. “He goes out for four hours and just kills it. I’m obviously not out onstage that long, but he inspires me to go at it as hard as I can every night.”
